Two-Minute Market Focus: New Equity Supply Could Reshape Market Dynamics

What could happen if the supply of U.S. equities exceeds investor demand? In this episode, Focus’ Todd Jones examines recent market performance, a potential shift in equity supply and demand, and how private equity dry powder could influence the market if new issuance puts pressure on existing shares.

Key Takeaways

  • Commodities gained 2.4% over the past 30 days, and the S&P Large Cap Index rose 0.2%, while bonds, international developed stocks, and small-cap stocks declined.

  • U.S. equity supply is forecast to exceed demand in 2026 for the first time since the 2000s, with potential additional issuance from Anthropic and OpenAI adding to the imbalance.

  • Private equity dry powder could help absorb opportunities created by lower share prices, while projected S&P earnings growth of 25% to 30% in 2026 provides a supportive backdrop.

Commodities Lead as Small Caps Absorb the Selling

Over the past 30 days, commodities led market performance with a 2.4% gain, while the S&P Large Cap Index rose 0.2% despite substantial selling in AI- and technology-related sectors. The bond market declined 0.25% as the 10-year yield peaked at 5.3% before easing to 5.1%, where buying interest has begun to emerge.

A stronger dollar weighed on international developed markets, which fell 1.35%. The Russell 2000 Index declined 4.8%, absorbing much of the market’s selling pressure. Technology companies within the small-cap universe tend to be less profitable, leaving the index particularly vulnerable during a technology sell-off.

Equity Supply Could Exceed Demand in 2026

A Goldman Sachs forecast of annual U.S. equity issuance as a share of Russell 3000 market capitalization shows supply potentially exceeding demand in 2026 for the first time since the 2000s. Because markets are driven in part by supply and demand, a wave of new issuance could put downward pressure on existing shares.

Potential offerings from Anthropic and OpenAI over the next six months could further skew that balance. However, today’s environment differs from 1999 and 2000 because a substantial amount of private equity dry powder remains on the sidelines. If additional supply pushes share prices lower, private equity buyers may find more attractive opportunities to acquire public companies and take them private.

Strong Earnings Growth Provides a Supportive Backdrop

The interaction between new issuance, existing share prices, and private equity demand will be important to watch in the months ahead. For now, the S&P 500 is still expected to deliver earnings growth of roughly 25% to 30% in 2026. That outlook offers a powerful fundamental backdrop and suggests the potential supply imbalance is not yet a major cause for concern.
