What Could the Next 12 Months Look Like for Bond Investors?

In this Focus Perspectives video, Blerina Hysi explores what the next 12 months could hold for bond investors amid uncertainty around Federal Reserve policy, inflation, and economic growth.

What matters most in today's bond market? The honest answer is that no one knows exactly what the next 12 months will bring. But there are a few things we're paying very close attention to:

  1. The Federal Reserve: The Fed has made it clear that it remains data dependent. Rather than following a predetermined path, future decisions on interest rates will depend on what the economic data tells us.
  2. Inflation: We've made meaningful progress from the highs we experienced a few years ago, but the path to lower inflation may not be perfectly smooth. Inflation could continue to improve, but there may be bumps along the way.
  3. The economy: Despite higher interest rates, economic growth has remained surprisingly resilient. Consumers have continued to spend, the labor market has remained relatively healthy, and the economy has held up better than many expected.

What Bond Investors Can Do Now

It means focusing less on trying to predict the next Fed meeting and more on the things we are able to actually control. We can:

  • Concentrate on maintaining high-quality portfolios.
  • Be thoughtful about duration and avoid making dramatic bets on where rates are headed.
  • Diversify across sectors rather than relying on a single part of the market.
  • Remain tax aware, recognizing that after-tax outcomes matter just as much as headline yields.

The Bottom Line

While the headlines will continue to change, successful fixed income investing has never been about perfectly predicting the future. It's about staying disciplined, remaining diversified, and building portfolios designed to navigate a wide range of outcomes.

And that's exactly what we're focused on heading into the year ahead. If you have any questions about how bond investing may impact your portfolio, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your advisor.
